We Make Scents

Base Oils

  • Brassica napus

Yes, canola oil. The same stuff you have in your kitchen, if you are using organic non-GMO canola oil. We use canola oil derived from the original seed stock that was developed in the 1970s using traditional selective breeding methods. This ensures that our canola oil is free of pesticide residues that can be found in more conventional products. High in omega fatty acids, canola oil has a similar profile to olive oil.

Canola oil gives soap a nice, creamy lather, that leaves the skin moisturized and ready to withstand the stresses of daily life.

  • Cocos nucifera

Sourced from Vietnamese farms, we use organic non-GMO coconut oil.

Coconut oil gives us a harder bar that lasts longer in the shower. I also gives our soap a bubbly lather. Who doesn’t love bubbles?

  • Sus domesticus

We only use lard sourced from small, independent farmers in the Great Lakes region. Our farmers are committed to responsible stewardship of their animals and the planet. This means pigs that are raised in pastures and forests. These pigs are able to interact with each other freely, explore their environments, forage on everything from grubs and earthworms to nuts, grasses, and tubers. Not only does this lead to happier and healthier animals, but it also produces a lard that is higher in nutrients when compared to conventional methods.

Lard gives soap a firm texture while being exceptionally mild on the skin. The deep conditioning and moisturizing qualities of our soap are due to the lard in each bar.

Kaolin clay is naturally-occurring non-porous clay with gentle exfoliating properties. It adds a slickness to the soap lather typically associated with shaving soap. It is safe for all skin types because it does not draw oils out of the skin.

Sodium lactate is our one concession to industrial sensibilities. It hardens soap, making a bar that last considerably longer in the shower.

We’d like to say that the lactate, an alpha hydroxy acid, gives skin a brighter smoother appearance, but at <0.01% your sweat has more lactate then our soap.
